This is so intense. Sometimes I’ll see shoots like this that makes me want to be a photographer.

When I first saw these, I thought they were peeled fruit. Mind is blown.

Nick Knight

I love following photography blogs cause you get to see some of the most amazing shots. I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen the photographer prominently featured in the spread along with the model. Nick Knight did an amazing job incorporating himself into the pictures without being intrusive and forced. Makes me want to take pictures.

I bet the mother from my previous post was inspired by Van Hollenbe, but how could she not be? This is amazingly creative.

Ellen Von Unwerth
Ellen Von Unwerth’s work makes me think of women thrust into a fairytale setting, with a bag full of coke. They’re just having fun and you can see it in the pictures. It’s erotic, gaudy and vulgar, but not quite. I really like this editorial for Interview magazine, which was started by Andy Warhol himself! It’s fun and it grabs your attention!

“I’m just trying to make beautiful pictures. I don’t see my works as exploitative. They’re just cheeky, they’re fun, and the models aren’t complaining.” -Ellen Von Unwerth

“Von Unwerth brings an energetic femininity to fashion photography… The models in her pictures seem to have real identities, and the photos often convey a sexuality without reducing the subjects to sex objects.”

“The models in Ellen Von Unwerth’s fashion pictures tell secrets, share fantasies, loll, and play games. Some of those games are innocent enough; others are not.”

Honestly, this is probably one of her more tame shoots, but to be fair Ellen does things that are just as sweet and romantic as they are wild. I just prefer the former. ;)

Cultured/Photography
I love being worldly, not in the sense that material value exceeds that of a spiritual existence, but in the sense of being cultured, experienced and sophisticated. I strive for that. Which is fortuitous because I love keeping myself updated with popular culture and current events — it’s fun for me. I don’t want to stop there;I want go to above and beyond, from being bilingual to tri- or quad-lingual (adding spanish and french into the mix) and the like.
One thing I can’t get enough of is photography. I like to think I’ve immersed myself enough to give a fairly credible critique on photos. I definitely know what I like and what I don’t like. Let me go off on a small tangent, because I feel compelled to say this. I hate too much photoshop. That means over sharpening, too much saturation, and just tweeking a photo in order to get something that isn’t there. To me, being a photographer isn’t having a professional grade camera — any Joe with the money can get their hands on it, it’s having that eye. Seeing what others don’t see and just knowing just the basic elements of photography (ie. angles and lighting). End rant.
Fashion photography is probably my favorite. It’s the most creative and artistic. It’s sexier, much more daring and willing to test their limits. Landscape is so boring… it’s beautiful, no doubt, but people just make a picture that much more interesting. Scenery just all seems to look the same at one point or another and begins to look similar; whereas a huge chunk fashion photography thrives on being different. Plus it helps that all my favorite photographers are fashion photographers or have a huge appreciation for it too.
This reminds me, I want to subscribe to Interview, Numero, V and W magazine.
